AHA Go Red for Women’s Know Your Numbers Campaign

AmeriClerkships

Founded in 2007, AmeriClerkships has helped place more than 700 foreign students into health care residencies in the United States. Also involved in community service, AmeriClerkships supports the American Heart Association (AHA).

Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of women in the United States. This is why the AHA’s Go Red for Women program encourages women to take control of their heart health. One way they can do this is by knowing the most critical numbers that determine their heart health. These personal health numbers include blood pressure, blood sugar, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and body ass index (BMI).

The numbers guide health care providers in determining heart health as well as the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases by atherosclerosis. These diseases range from angina and peripheral artery disease to heart attacks and stroke.

According to the AHA, some of the ideal numbers for good heart health are as follows: 120/80 mm HG for blood pressure, 100 mg/dl for fasting blood sugar, and 25 kg/m2 for BMI.

By getting to know these figures, women can work with their physicians to determine an appropriate regimen to improve their heart health.
